Trance and Ecstasy As a Relligious Phenomenon

Tsvetan Teofanov

The paper deals with the religiously-motivated states of trance and ecstasy of a medium who is believed to contact a god or a spirit that is usually also thought to occupy the body of the medium temporarily. It explores some specific examples of altered states of consciousness, possession, and shaman’s conduct (physical behavior, psychic condition and culturally-defined behavior) with reference to the written revelations and the process by which they are produced.
