Issa, Katya. Western Stereotypes About the East – Problems in the Personal Identification of the Arabs in Bulgaria. – In: Manas: East–West: Languages, Cultures, Societies, Vol. 3, 1, 2017.
The report presents some of the negative stereotypes of the Orient, which received its initial impetus in the era of the formation of the Balkan nations, stimulated by the various economic, political and social shocks to Bulgaria. This created a lasting negative attitude towards the ethnic and religious communities of the East.
These are world-famous stereotypes that Bulgarian people are receiving ready made from Europe. They use them uncritically, forgetting the historical fact that in the past we were considered "Europe," while in the present, even after Bulgaria has become a part of it, Europe still looks at us as people from the East, known for their intolerance, primitiveness and unpredictability. In such a situation, the personal identification of Arabs living in Bulgaria and their children born here is controversial and difficult to reconcile with the values set by our society.
