Turkısh Loanwords Of Arabıc Orıgın For Clothıng In The Bulgarıan Language

Zhana Zhelyazkova

Summary

This article focuses on words of Arabic origin for traditional clothing, borrowed into Bulgarian through Turkish during Ottoman domination. A great amount of Arabic lexis was transferred to Bulgarian by means of a specific hybrid language of a triple Turkish-Arabic-Persian nature, called Ottoman or Ottoman Turkish. Only several words of this type function within the lexical system of the literary Bulgarian language. Most of the borrowings became part of various Bulgarian dialects thus naming clothing in general or various parts of traditional Bulgarian costumes, materials or accessories.

Keywords: clothing, traditional costumes, Turkish loanwords of Arabic origin, dialects.
