Meanings Of The Word Ātmán In Three Verses Of Bhagavad Gita

Georgina Russeva

In verses VI. 5, 6 and 7 of the Bhagavadgītā repeatedly within one sentence the word ātmán (primary meaning "breath") is used with different (or perhaps not different) semantics. We will trace the possible meanings of the word ātmán in these three verses and examine how these meanings could be derived from the ancient meanings of this word in the Vedas and Brahmanas. For this purpose, we will look at the process of the grammaticalization of the word ātmán and its reflexive and emphatic functions.

Keywords: atman, self, reflexivity, Bhagavadgita
