English and Turkish Loanwords in Conteporary Bulgarian Sleng

Lilyana Grozdanova

After years of rigorous political and social regulation of language use, in a relatively short period of time, Bulgarian slang has become a field of dynamic development, innovation and diversity. Through mass media, it has penetrated written speech, crossing the boundary of a single social group and achieving nationwide popularity. Nowadays one can hear slang used not only by young people, but in news bulletins, serious talks, even in parliamentary discussions. This paper presents the results of a study which aimed to find out whether and how English and Turkish borrowings interact within the domain of Bulgarian slang. Adopting a synchronic approach, the author has identified six major lexical fields, where affixes, words and patterns borrowed from these two sources are actively used, interacting with the host language and one another.

Keywords: Bulgarian slang, word formation, English borrowings, Turkish borrowings, hybrid words
