Demonstrative Pronouns In Contemporary Arabic Dialects

Hristina Tchobanova

This article presents a synopsis of the state of the paradigm and the functions of demonstratives in contemporary dialects of the Arabic language in a synchronous and diachronic manner, compared to the systems of forms and functions, in its classical and modern standard varieties. The table of demonstrative forms allows us to trace both the conservative and innovative features in the modern dialectal paradigm. Morphologically not so complex, demonstratives function in contemporary Arabic dialects with certain syntactic, semantic and pragmatic differences. Separate functional uses indicate the evolution of different processes of grammaticalization in this system. Within the continual diglossic intralinguistic interference in which Arabic language exists, the paradigm of forms and uses of demonstratives is also challenging in teaching Arabic as a foreign language from the beginning level.
