Summary

The present paper deals with the derivation of nouns indicating the result of an activity (Nomina patientis) in contemporary literary Arabic. The study applies an onomasiological approach, and the specific analysis is carried out within the boundaries of the derivational type. The formation of the analyzed derivatives is characterized by some variety, which is basically due to the use of a great number of derivational formants, most of which belong to the transfixation type, and more rarely to the confixation type. The motivating words are transitive verbs only. Some of the derivational types, characteristic of transfixal derivation, and all types belonging to confixal derivation are marked by great regularity and productivity. Most of the transfixal types are marked by relatively great regularity but low productivity. Some derivational types display an additional derivational meaning, namely „a totality of homogeneous objects, which is the result of carrying out the activity denoted by the motivating verb” or „waste material, which is the result of carrying out the activity denoted by the motivating verb”. The derivatives belong both to terminological and common language lexis.
