Mario Appen

Summary

The present article deals with the structure of the most popular Persian farhang Borhān-e qāte‘ as well as with the structure of its individual entries. This monolingual dictionary was compiled in 1062 AH/AD 1651 in India by the prominent lexicographer Mohammad-Hosayn b. Khalaf Tabrizi and has had a considerable impact on development of Persian lexicography during the next centuries not only in India and Iran, but also on lexicography in the Ottoman Empire as a whole. The research subject in the present article is the edition of Borhān-e qāte from 1834 – Borhān-e qāte wa molḥaqāt (Conclusive proof with supplement) of Thomas Roebuck.
