Pavlovich, Pavel. Formation Of The Classical Schools Of Law In Sunnī Islam. – In: Manas: The Arab World and Islam in Cultural-Historical Perspective, Vol. 3, 2, 2017.
This essay is devoted to the early development (ca. 150/767–ca. 250/864) of the Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, and Ḥanbalī legal schools (madhāhib, sg. madhhab) in Sunnī Islam. Along with the legal views of these schools’ eponymous founders, I treat aspects of their theological conceptions, such as the createdness of Allah’s speech, the status of the grave sinner, and the freedom of human will. The essay includes an exposition on the legal hermeneutics of Muḥammad b. Idrīs al-Shāfiʿī.
Keywords: Sunni Islam, Hanafis, Malikis, Shafiis, Hanbalis, legal schools, free will, predestination, createdness, attributes, divine speech, legal hermeneutics
