Evstatieva, Galina. Detachment Of The Muslim Rulers From The Community: Ḥijābs And Ḥājibs Of The Caliphs. – In: Manas: The Arab World and Islam in Cultural-Historical Perspective, Vol. 3, 2, 2017.
The article analyzes the introduction and establishment in the courts of the Muslim rulers of the ḥijāba institution, the servants of which were responsible for separating and guarding the caliphs by “letting down the curtain” in front of the caliphs (ḥijāb al-khalīfa). Drawing on Arabic historical and other classical sources compiled by chroniclers and scribes, the essay traces the importance and the transformations of the functions, role, and political influence of the ḥājib office. The analysis thus foregrounds the critical attitude of the Islamic scholars and historians towards the detachment of the Caliphs from the Muslim community (umma) as a controversial political practice contradicting the early Islamic ideals established by the Prophet Muhammad and the “Rightly Guided Caliphs” (632–661).
