Simeonova, Siyana. Women's rights in ASEAN Member States. – In: Manas: Cultures and Societies of South, East and Southeast Asia: Traditionalism, Dynamics and Globalization, Vol. 4, 2, 2018.
The current article aims at addressing the current issues related to women's rights and their role in the society. Viewed through a historical, religious, social and cultural prism, this issue reflects the basic aspects of Southeast Asian society in which gender bias force women into subservient roles as wives and mothers and sends a diminishing message to girls about their worth. The specific areas of discrimination, adopted documents aimed at limiting this phenomenon, as well as specific practices that governments take in response to it, are mentioned. The lessons learned are summarized and future projections for the problem are given.
The work consists of the following sections:
- The issue of women's rights in the Southeast Asian region from a historical, religious and cultural point of view
- Key documents in support of women's rights affecting ASEAN member states
- Women in modern Southeast Asia
