Sofia University Indology Department’s MA-programme marks the first step in the efforts to expand studies on India in Bulgaria beyond philology. It aims at training of varied in profile specialists and is open to students who have graduated in other subjects too. A programme “Indian Cultural and Social Studies” was started seven years ago. In 2007-2008 the programme was renamed “Indian and Iranian Cultural and Social Studies” (the Department of Iranian Studies joined in it), its contents expanded and two profiles created within it – in Indology and in Iranian Studies. Advancing Indology programmes of Sofia University beyond philology is an important prerequisite for the very prospect of Indian studies in Bulgaria. Extended progammes provide a ground for interdisciplinary projects on India and wider opportunities for Indology students to pursue their studies further and be able to utilize them after graduation in diverse walks of life. They promote a better understanding of Indian culture through a multidimensional study of India. In studying any culture a wider perspective is important but with India it is a measure of understanding the true substance of Indian culture as well as a matter of having the means to reveal it.
